Use this local SEO checklist to make sure your Google Business Profile, website, reviews, citations, and tracking are set up to bring in local customers.

Local SEO doesn't have to be complicated. Most of the businesses that show up at the top of local search results aren't doing anything secret. They've just checked off the fundamentals and kept them up to date.

Use this local SEO checklist to see where your business stands. If you can check every box, you're ahead of most of your competitors.

Google Business Profile

1. Your profile is claimed and verified. If you haven't done this yet, it's the single most important step on this list.

2. Your primary category is accurate and specific. Choose the category that best matches your main service, then add relevant secondary categories.

3. Every section is filled out. Hours, services, service area, attributes, description, and website link should all be complete.

4. Your holiday and special hours are up to date. Nothing frustrates a customer faster than showing up to a closed door.

5. You've uploaded real photos. Add photos of your storefront, team, work, and products, and add new ones regularly.

6. You post updates. Share offers, events, and news on your profile at least a few times a month.

Reviews

7. You ask for reviews as part of your normal process. Not once in a while. Every time.

8. You make it easy. Send customers a direct review link by text or email.

9. You respond to every review, positive or negative, within a few days.

Name, Address, and Phone Number

10. Your business info matches everywhere. Your name, address, and phone number should be identical on your website, Google, Facebook, and every directory.

11. You're listed on the major platforms. At minimum: Google, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Facebook, and Yelp.

12. You're listed in local and industry directories. Your chamber of commerce, Better Business Bureau, and directories specific to your industry.

Your Website

13. Your website loads fast on a phone. Most local searches happen on mobile. A slow site loses customers before they ever see it.

14. Your city and service areas are on key pages. Your homepage, service pages, and contact page should make your location clear.

15. Each main service has its own page. One page per service gives Google a clear signal about what you offer.

16. Your contact information is easy to find. Put your phone number in the header and your full address in the footer.

17. You've added LocalBusiness schema. This structured data helps search engines understand your business details.

Content and Links

18. You publish local content. Blog posts, project spotlights, and guides that mention your community and answer local questions.

19. You've earned local links. Sponsorships, partnerships, local news coverage, and community organizations can all link back to your website.

Tracking

20. You're measuring results. Track calls, form fills, direction requests, and rankings for your main services so you know what's working.

How Did You Score?

16 to 20: You're in great shape. Focus on keeping things consistent.

10 to 15: You have a solid foundation with some gaps worth fixing.

Fewer than 10: There's a big opportunity here. Start with your Google Business Profile and reviews, since those tend to make the fastest difference.
