How to Rank Higher on Google Maps: 10 Ways to Show Up in the Local Pack
Learn how to rank higher on Google Maps with practical steps for your Google Business Profile, reviews, categories, photos, and local signals that move you into the top three.

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "coffee in Logan," the first thing they usually see is a map with three businesses underneath it. That's the local pack, and for most local businesses, it's the most valuable real estate on Google.
If you're not in those top three spots, a lot of customers will never scroll far enough to find you. Here's how to rank higher on Google Maps, starting with the changes that make the biggest difference.
How Google Decides Who Shows Up
Google says local rankings come down to three things:
Relevance: how well your business matches what someone searched for
Distance: how close your business is to the searcher or the location in their search
Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, based on reviews, links, mentions, and overall online presence
You can't change where your customers are standing. But you have a lot of control over relevance and prominence.
1. Claim and Complete Your Google Business Profile
Everything starts with your Google Business Profile. If you haven't claimed it yet, start there. Our guide to what a Google Business Profile is and why it matters covers the basics.
Then fill out every section: hours, services, service area, attributes, business description, and website link. Incomplete profiles rarely win the map pack.
2. Choose the Right Primary Category
Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals you control. Pick the one that most accurately describes your main service, like "Roofing Contractor" instead of just "Contractor."
Then add secondary categories for other services you offer. Look at the top-ranking competitors in your area to see which categories they use.
3. Use Your Real Business Name
It's tempting to stuff keywords into your business name, like "Smith Plumbing Best Plumber Logan Utah." Don't. It violates Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended. Use your real name exactly as it appears on your signage and paperwork.
4. Get More Reviews, Consistently
Reviews are one of the biggest prominence signals. Google looks at how many you have, your average rating, and how recent they are. A steady stream of new reviews beats a big burst once a year.
Make asking for reviews part of your normal process. Our post on how to get more Google reviews lays out a simple system.
5. Respond to Every Review
Replying to reviews shows Google and customers that you're active and engaged. Thank people for positive reviews, and respond calmly and professionally to negative ones.
6. Add Real Photos Regularly
Profiles with fresh, real photos tend to get more engagement. Upload pictures of your storefront, your team, your work, and your products. Skip the stock photos. Customers want to see the real thing.
7. Post Updates to Your Profile
Google Business Profile lets you publish posts about offers, events, and updates. Posting regularly keeps your profile active and gives searchers another reason to choose you.
8. Keep Your Name, Address, and Phone Number Consistent
Your business name, address, and phone number should match exactly everywhere they appear: your website, Google, Facebook, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and local directories. Inconsistent information creates doubt for both customers and search engines.
9. Strengthen Your Website's Local Signals
Your website supports your map rankings. Make sure it includes:
Your city and service areas on key pages
A clear contact page with your address and phone number
Individual pages for your main services
LocalBusiness schema markup
10. Earn Local Mentions and Links
Links and mentions from other local organizations help build prominence. Think chamber of commerce memberships, local sponsorships, community event pages, local news, and partnerships with nearby businesses.
How Long Does It Take?
Some changes, like fixing your primary category, can make a difference within a few weeks. Building reviews and local authority takes longer. Most businesses see steady improvement over three to six months of consistent effort.
Track Your Progress
Search for your main services from different spots in your area to see where you show up. Your Google Business Profile performance report also shows how many people found you, called you, and asked for directions.
Get Into the Top Three
The businesses that dominate the map pack usually aren't doing anything fancy. They just do the basics well and keep doing them.
