What Is a Good Conversion Rate? Benchmarks and How to Improve Yours
What is a good conversion rate? Learn how to calculate it, rough benchmarks by channel, why "good" depends on your business, and practical ways to improve it.

Traffic is great. But if hundreds of people visit your website every month and nobody calls, books, or buys, the traffic isn't doing much for your business.
That's where conversion rate comes in. It tells you how well your website or ads turn visitors into leads and customers. Here's how to calculate it, what counts as a good conversion rate, and how to improve yours.
What Is a Conversion Rate?
A conversion is any action you want someone to take: filling out a form, calling, booking an appointment, signing up for an email list, or making a purchase.
Your conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who take that action.
Conversion rate = Conversions ÷ Visitors × 100
If 1,000 people visit your website in a month and 30 of them fill out your contact form, your conversion rate is 3%.
So, What Is a Good Conversion Rate?
There's no single number that applies to every business, but here are some rough benchmarks that are commonly cited. Exact figures vary by source and industry.
Ecommerce websites: often around 2% to 3%
Lead generation websites: often around 2% to 5%
Dedicated landing pages: often higher, with strong pages reaching 10% or more
Google Search ads: often in the mid single digits, varying widely by industry
A better way to think about it: a good conversion rate is one that makes your marketing profitable and keeps improving over time.
Why "Good" Depends on Your Business
Several things make conversion rates swing up or down:
Price. A $40 product converts more easily than a $40,000 remodel.
Traffic source. Someone who searched for your service converts better than someone who saw a social post.
Intent. "Emergency plumber near me" converts far better than "how to fix a leaky faucet."
What you count. A phone call and a newsletter signup are both conversions, but they're worth very different amounts.
That's why comparing your numbers to a generic average can be misleading. Your own trend over time is often the more useful benchmark.
Track the Right Conversions
Before you can improve your conversion rate, make sure you're measuring the right things:
Primary conversions: calls, contact forms, bookings, and purchases
Secondary conversions: email signups, downloads, and clicks to call or get directions
Set these up as conversions in Google Analytics and your ad platforms. Tracking phone calls is especially important for local service businesses, since many customers would rather call than fill out a form.
Using clean tracking links helps too. Our free UTM generator makes it easy to see which campaigns drive conversions.
How to Improve Your Conversion Rate
1. Make your offer clear. Visitors should understand what you do, who it's for, and what to do next within a few seconds.
2. Use one clear call to action per page. "Get a Free Quote" beats a page with five competing buttons.
3. Speed up your website. Slow pages lose visitors before they ever see your offer.
4. Make it work beautifully on phones. Most local traffic is mobile. Buttons should be easy to tap and forms easy to fill out.
5. Show proof. Reviews, testimonials, project photos, and real numbers build trust.
6. Shorten your forms. Every extra field costs you leads. Ask only for what you truly need.
7. Match your ads to your landing pages. If your ad promises a free estimate, the page should lead with that same offer.
8. Make calling easy. Put a click-to-call phone number at the top of every page.
9. Test one change at a time. Try a new headline or button, measure the results, and keep what works.
Small Changes, Big Results
Improving your conversion rate is often the cheapest way to grow. Doubling your conversion rate from 2% to 4% has the same effect as doubling your traffic, without spending more on ads.
If you're running ads, a higher conversion rate also improves your return on ad spend. Run the numbers with our free ROAS calculator.
